The Cost of Fighting Mold in Your Home

in Home Care /by Carolyn Willbanks

Cost of Fighting Mold – Guest article by Ana-Maria Sanders from Loanstart.com

More than half of households in the United States have mold problems, according to research. Mold infestation is very common after a natural disaster. But it’s also a major issue in homes that have water leaks or high moisture content. And the cost of fighting mold can sometimes be overwhelming.

There are many reasons why you should be concerned about mold growth in your home. Molds are microscopic organisms that can have a negative impact on your family’s health.

Mold can also cause damage on structural materials like wood and concrete, discoloration of fabrics, and disintegration of paper and cardboard.

Molds grow and reproduce quickly. Immediately cleanup is critical to minimize the damage and prevent the cost of mold repairs from climbing.

How Much Does Mold Cleanup Cost?

According to HomeAdvisor, the cost of mold removal ranges from $1,112 – $3,337. Larger jobs can go as high as $6,000 – $12,000 or more.  The price of repairing mold damage depends on many factors, such as the area size, the extent of mold damage, and whether there’s a need to replace or repair structural materials. Click here for more cost details.

Indeed, mold remediation can be very expensive. What’s more, coverage for mold varies by insurance company and it isn’t usually covered by home insurance unless the mold infestation resulted from a disaster such as fire, storm, or flood. (A separate flood policy is available through FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program). If the mold build-up resulted from preventable water leaks, you will most likely shoulder all the expenses. If you don’t have enough budget to cover the cost of fight mold and the repairs, you can use payday loans to cover the cost.

Most remediation experts charge $10-$25 per square foot. So, for a 100 square-foot area, you will have to spend $1,000-$2,500.

Take Action to Prevent Mold

Protecting your home from mold is much cheaper than waiting until it invades your property. There are several ways to mold-proof your home and they all require minimal investments.

Use Dehumidifiers

An easy way to prevent the growth of mold in your home is by using dehumidifiers. They work by lowering the moisture level in your indoor air, making your home less vulnerable to mold and mildew infestation. Portable dehumidifiers cost anywhere from $25 to $50 while whole-house dehumidifiers cost $1,550 to $1,700. These devices can also reduce dust in your home and improve your indoor air quality.

Fix Water Leaks

Broken pipes, leaky plumbing fixtures, cracks or holes around your home, as well as loose joints or fitting are common sources of moisture. It’s important to have these problems addressed as soon as possible to prevent mold from growing.

Keep Your Home Clean

Maintaining a clean home is the easiest way to protect your home from mold. By regularly cleaning your space, you can spot signs of mold early on and clean it up before it gets worse. Minor infestations can be addressed using regular products like soap or vinegar (bleach is not effective for killing mold). Additionally, you can spot water leaks that could cause the onset of mold.

Where Do You Find Mold Remediators?

It’s much cheaper when you have to deal with mold by yourself. However, for large areas, it is much better and safer to leave it to the pros. Mold infestation in hard-to-reach areas like crawlspaces and attics require special equipment and cleaning procedures. While it could cost you more to hire experts, you can have peace of mind that the mold will be gone in no time.

Nonetheless, you should look for a certified company that specializes in mold remediation. Hiring experienced mold removal specialists is the best way to ensure that the job will be done completely and thoroughly. These experts will first conduct an inspection to assess the extent of the damage.

Mold build-up is a common problem among homeowners. If not addressed early on, it could compromise your health and ruin your home. Mold grows in homes that have been exposed to water damage or flood. Since mold grows and spreads rapidly, it should be cleaned up immediately. Mold remediation can be costly. Many factors affect the price, such as the covered area, the extent of damage, and the repairs needed to be done.

While it’s much cheaper to deal with the mold by yourself, for large areas, you will most likely need help from the experts. Make sure to hire a reliable company to get the results you want.
